Ceremony, the first film from writer/director Max Winkler, is a movie that doesn’t give you the chance to breath; moving quickly from scene to scene with its characters speaking what feels like rapid fire dialogue, it initially requires the viewer to adjust to the proceedings. But once you get on board with Winkler’s style and get invested into the story, Ceremony quickly becomes something more than just your run of the mill quirky indie love story; it’s a movie that’s far funnier than anything in recent memory.

Movie Review: TABLE FOR THREE (2009)

Posted by Jonathan Sullivan on December 31, 2011

Note: Haven’t been around for awhile due to family commitments but didn’t want potential readers to think I abandoned the site already. Here’s a review originally posted on my personal site. I may port more of these over as time goes by (or go too long without a new review). Recycling material after only a month and change? Great sign.

Starring: Brandon Routh, Jesse Bradford, Sophie Bush, Jennifer Morrison

Written and Directed by: Michael Samonek

Table for Three would have been a fine romantic comedy had it contained either more romance or more comedy. Instead, it’s a movie that features very painful jokes told by some really unlikable characters with a story that has an good enough hook but with terrible execution.

Notable DVD Releases – December 20, 2011

Posted by Jonathan Sullivan on December 20, 2011

Someone just reminded Forest Whitaker he was in VANTAGE POINT.

This week on DVD: Bruce Willis continues dipping his foot into the direct to DVD waters, another indie by Michael Polish finally gets distribution, we play catch up with an aging Butch Cassidy and, in the spirit of Christmas, IFC throws us a foreign horror import about a murderous Saint Nicholas. You know, for the kids.

Fellas, here’s a good way to judge your significant other: if she finds any of the antics Mandy Moore gets into through the course of this movie “cute” or “smart”, RUN. RUN WHILE YOU STILL HAVE LEGS BECAUSE SHE WILL PROBABLY CUT THEM OFF WHILE YOU’RE SLEEPING.

Palo Alto, CA has some good performances and a too cute to hate romance subplot, but when you boil down to it a simple fact remains: nothing really happens.

Notable DVD Releases – December 13, 2011

Posted by Jonathan Sullivan on December 13, 2011

When Billy Bob offers you a handful of manure, YOU TAKE IT.

Here’s what you’ll find this week on the DVD shelves: a long on the shelf surrealist movie about manure salesman, three horror films (one that got some festival love this year, one with a dumb premise, the other with a “so ridiculous I already love it” premise), and a release attempting to ride the buzz of The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo. Hope your couch is nice and comfortable.

Movie Review: ALIEN ARMAGEDDON (2011)

Posted by Jonathan Sullivan on December 6, 2011

Starring: Katharine McEwan, Don Scribner, Rochelle Vallese, Benjamin J. Cain Jr.

Written and Directed by: Neil Johnson

Distributed by: Phase 4 Films

Buy Alien Armageddon on DVD (or Blu-ray)

Rent Alien Armageddon on Amazon

Don’t judge Alien Armageddon by its cover; although it seems like a rip-off of both Cowboys and Aliens and Battle: L.A. it’s actually a work that feels completely of its own. Playing out like a trashy science fiction novel, writer/director Neil Johnson presents 90 minutes that is filled with interesting ideas, above average special effects, and more importantly decent acting. Unfortunately it goes a little overboard with both the information and the set up, slowing down the proceedings and it will most likely test the patience of any potential viewers. Those who stick with it though may be pleasantly surprised.

Notable DVD Releases – December 6, 2011

Posted by Jonathan Sullivan on December 6, 2011

It’s Christmas time so you know what that means, right? Santa Claus beating the crap out of some zombies. Also a clever attempt to cash in on Cowboys and Aliens and Rip Torn takes a few minutes away from beating up everyone in his path to star in a movie.

Hat tip to DVDReleases.org as I got all this information (plot synopsis especially) from them.

Just reading that title makes me feel like less of a man. Don’t worry that’s the last penis joke for this whole review. Maybe.
